Pewdiepie's Linux video made me want to rice again

by Jacob Steringa

A couple of years back I was really into customizing my Linux desktop. I started by using a window manager on my Ubuntu machine at work and customizing it to my liking. I really like a minimal setup tailored to my wishes and I ultimately ended up with Void Linux and the Bspwm window manager on all my machines.

Fast forward a couple of years and life happens; I became a father and time was suddenly in short supply. I started missing little quality of life features that came with a fully integrated desktop environment like auto mounting USB drives. More important, I didn't feel figuring out how to configure this myself. Maybe switching jobs also played a role. At this new job I started using a Macbook and my custom setup and MacOS just were too different.

Anyway, I decided I needed something that worked out of the box and was somewhat similar to MacOS. Gnome, in my opinion fits this description really well. I really like the vanilla Gnome experience and I use it till this day.

But then Pewdiepie dropped is Linux video! This really triggered something in me and now I feel the need to start ricing again. I have installed Debian on my Thinkpad and dusted of my old Bspwm setup. But why stop there? I think I am going to give Arch Linux a try! Also, the X window system is ancient and I want to try one of the new window managers for Wayland.

Who knows, maybe I can say "I use Arch btw" in couple of weeks :)

As an aside: I think it is amazing that someone with the reach Pewdiepie has starts promoting Linux for the desktop. Maybe 2025 will finally be the year of the Linux desktop! 😂
